ALLERGY & INTOLERANCE TESTING

Firstly, I would stress that allergy/intolerance testing is not always necessary. As a qualified Nutritional Therapist I am trained to spot possible ‘problem’ foods by looking at a food diary, health questionnaire and of course speaking to you to get further information during a consultation.  We may decide to try an elimination diet and this is often enough to get some good results and improvements in your health without the need for tests.

However, if you are the type of person that wants a yes/no answer then testing might may the way forward for you.

The food allergy/intolerance testing I work with involves taking a very small amount of blood from the finger (pin prick). It is then analysed for antibodies to certain foods.  There are lots of tests which claim to diagnose allergies on the market but I will NOT use any other methods as I can't personally see any real scientific evidence behind them. It’s really important that you are sure that you have an allergy or intolerance before cutting out entire food groups for a prolonged amount of time. This needs to be done under the guidance of a practitioner who can advise you how to replace the missing nutrients.

If you choose to go for another type of testing PLEASE ask the person who performs the test about there qualifications and the science behind the test.

What is the difference between an Allergy & an Intolerance?

While less than 2% of the population suffer from food allergies, it is estimated that more than 20% of the population suffer from food intolerance.

Food Intolerance

Food Allergy

  • Reactions are usually delayed and symptoms may take several days to appear.
  • You can be intolerant to several different food groups at the same time.
  • Sufferers can experience multiple symptoms, from migraine to bloating, diarrhoea, lethargy and a general feeling of unwellness.
  • Reactions usually occur quickly, with a maximum of 2 hours after exposure to the ‘reactive’ food.
  • Food allergy involves the body’s immune system and is a reaction to a specific food.
  • Symptoms include: difficulty breathing, rashes, swelling, runny nose and anaphylactic shock. These can potentially be life threatening.
There is a number of tests available catering for budget and food preference

Should I take the home test or send my sample to the laboratory?

This is entirely up to you. If you want to get your results quickly, you can order a Home Test kit and do the test yourself. This is also the cheapest option. Alternatively, if you prefer the test to be carried out in our laboratory where there is likely to be a higher degree of accuracy, you will be provided with an easy-to-use collection kit and the results will typically be available within less than two weeks.

It is advisable to book a consultation with myself to discuss the results and make sure we replace any nutrients which are cut out after the results of the test.  I can also help you with meal ideas.

To order a test or for more informtion please email me or call Nutrition naturally on tel. 07906 873601.
